The Lonely Road of Entrepreneurship: A Path to Authenticity and True Relationships

Entrepreneurship is often romanticized as the ultimate freedom—being your own boss, setting your own hours, and building something truly your own. However, the reality is that this journey can also be quite lonely. The isolation of working from home, the absence of colleagues, and the constant self-reliance can make the path of an entrepreneur a solitary one. Yet, this solitude is not without its profound rewards. In fact, it offers the unique opportunity to be your true, authentic self in ways that traditional employment rarely allows.


The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Entrepreneur


When you work for yourself, the typical 9-to-5 office environment is replaced by the quiet of your own workspace. There are no watercooler chats, no spontaneous brainstorming sessions, and no immediate feedback from colleagues. Instead, you find yourself alone with your thoughts and your plans, brainstorming in solitude for hours on end. This aspect of entrepreneurship can feel isolating, especially if you thrive on social interaction.

But this loneliness is not a permanent state. Over the years, I've built a robust network of contacts from my previous career. Each week, I make it a point to meet with them, keeping the connections alive and meaningful. These meetings are not just about business; they are about checking in on each other's lives, exploring potential collaborations, and offering mutual support. These interactions are founded on genuine relationships, free from the facades often necessary when representing another company.


Authenticity in Entrepreneurship


One of the greatest gifts of being an entrepreneur is the ability to be completely authentic. When you work for someone else, there's often a layer of pretense involved. You represent the company's brand and values, sometimes at the expense of your own. As an entrepreneuse, I am my own brand. I don't have to adopt someone else's vision or voice; I can be myself, fully and unapologetically.


This authenticity extends to the relationships I build. There is no room for bullshit when you are your own product. People see the real you, and this transparency fosters trust. Vulnerability, often perceived as a weakness, becomes a strength. Sharing personal traits and experiences allows others to relate to you, building a foundation of trust that is crucial for successful business relationships. Trust, after all, is everything in business.


The Power of Genuine Relationships


Authenticity opens doors. When you are true to yourself, you attract people who appreciate and value the real you. These are the relationships that matter—the ones built on mutual respect and trust. They are not transactional; they are genuine connections where both parties support and uplift each other.


Most people hide behind walls, afraid to show their true selves for fear of being seen as weak. But in reality, showing vulnerability and sharing personal stories make you more relatable. In the word "relationship," there is "relate," and this is the essence of forming true connections. When people relate to you, business flows more naturally and effortlessly.


From Autarky to Autonomy


Working for yourself does not mean you have to isolate yourself. There's a vital distinction between autarky (complete self-sufficiency) and autonomy (self-governance). As an entrepreneur, it's essential to build and maintain a network, to go out and meet people—even those you wouldn't normally encounter. In French, "entreprendre" means to undertake or to begin. Entrepreneurship is about starting something, no matter how small, and seeing where it can lead.


Every little step you take can open enormous doors. Meeting new people, exploring new ideas, and stepping out of your comfort zone are all part of the entrepreneurial journey. While the path may be lonely at times, it is also rich with opportunities for authentic connections and personal growth.


Moral of the story


Yes, entrepreneurship can be lonely, but it is also a journey of self-discovery and authenticity. It allows you to build true relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Embrace the solitude, but don't let it isolate you. Reach out, connect, and keep moving forward. Start somewhere, even if it seems insignificant. Every small step can lead to something great. After all, being an entrepreneur means going out there and starting something new—something that is uniquely and authentically yours.
