How to Be at Ease with Celebrities and Well-Known Personalities as a Host

Interviewing celebrities and high-profile personalities can be a daunting task, especially when you’re aware of their monumental achievements. I've had the honor of interacting with some of the most influential figures, including heads of state, ministers, sports legends and CEOs of major companies. How did I manage to not feel overwhelmed and get the best out of them during interviews? Here’s what I've learned.

We Are All Humans

The first thing to remember is that we are all humans. This fundamental truth helps put everyone on the same level. While it’s important to respect their achievements, it’s equally important to see them as people who have their own fears, hopes, and daily routines. This perspective helps dissolve the initial intimidation you might feel.

Focus on Their Achievements

Although we are all humans, the celebrities and personalities you’re interviewing have often accomplished extraordinary things. When I interviewed Mathieu Flamini, a former Arsenal and AC Milan football player who became the CEO of a biotech company revolutionizing the chemical industry, I was naturally impressed. But instead of letting that awe overshadow the interview, I focused on highlighting his impactful work. By centering the conversation on their achievements, you create a platform where their contributions shine, making the interview more engaging and informative for the audience.

Ask Relevant Questions

Asking relevant questions is key to getting the best out of your interviewees. Your goal is to provide valuable takeaways for your audience. When preparing questions, think about what aspects of their work and life will resonate most with your listeners. For instance, with Mathieu Flamini, I delved into his transition from sports to biotech, and the innovative work his company is doing. This not only highlighted his journey but also provided inspiration and information to the audience.

Find Common Ground

When speaking with heads of state, ministers, or CEOs, I’ve found that discussing everyday topics helps break the ice. People enjoy talking about life’s simple pleasures, whether it’s a funny anecdote, a shared interest, or a light-hearted joke. Finding common ground humanizes the interaction and makes the conversation flow more naturally. This approach helps in establishing a connection, making the interviewee feel more comfortable and open.

Be a Natural Bond Maker

Building rapport quickly is one of the most valuable skills a host can have. I genuinely love people and social interactions, which makes it easier for me to connect with individuals from all walks of life. Remembering names, showing genuine interest in their stories, and being present in the moment all contribute to forming a natural bond. This connection not only makes the interviewee feel valued but also enriches the conversation.

Embrace Your Uniqueness

Finally, remember that you are unique. Just as the celebrities have their paths, you have yours. Approach each interaction as a learning opportunity. Their stories can provide valuable lessons and inspiration for your own journey. Embrace these moments to grow and, who knows, you might end up becoming a celebrity in your own right.

Conclusion

Whether you are a host or simply someone looking to feel more at ease around celebrities or people in general, remember that everyone is human. Focus on their achievements, ask relevant questions, find common ground, and embrace your own uniqueness. Each interaction is a chance to learn and grow, and by doing so, you might discover that the path to becoming a celebrated personality is within your reach.
